Dr. Belsare’s discussed how perceived personal risk can vary between individuals in different contexts when it comes to exposure to zoonotic diseases. Having gained a general understanding of the Health Belief Model from your assigned reading, please consider how this model may help explain certain risky behaviors that Dr. Belsare covered in his lecture and discussion such as the man who fed many raccoons, veterinarians who hold needles in their mouths, the child who ate a snail, the researcher in Montana who elected not to bring all necessary personal protective equipment to conduct her work, or any other example mentioned during the discussion that you found interesting (there were several!). How does the Health Belief Model help us understand how and why some of these events occur?
