Cultural Competence or Cultural Humility Topic

Objective: To help students understand and communicate the importance of cultural competence, cultural humility, and embracing diverse perspectives in nursing practice, using Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk as a foundation.

In the previous assignment, you watched a

where the speaker discussed stereotypes about individuals or groups based on limited information. She emphasizes the importance of understanding multiple perspectives and avoiding a single, one-sided narrative when it comes to cultures, people, and experiences. This talk highlights the significance of embracing diverse viewpoints and avoiding assumptions, both of which are essential in cultural competence and a global worldview in nursing.

2. Take notes and reflect on the talk’s key messages and its relevance to nursing practice.
3. Select a Cultural Competence or Cultural Humility Topic: Each student should choose a specific topic within cultural competence or cultural humility to focus on in their presentation. Topics may include the importance of cultural competence in healthcare, the role of empathy in nursing practice, addressing healthcare disparities, or strategies for promoting cultural humility.
4. Develop a Presentation: Create a PowerPoint based on the following guidelines:

• Introduction: Begin with a brief introduction to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk and its relevance to nursing practice.
• Chosen Topic: Present the selected cultural competence or cultural humility topic and its significance in nursing practice.
• Key Messages: Highlight key messages or takeaways from Adichie’s talk that relate to the chosen topic.
• Real-Life Examples: Include real-life examples or case studies from nursing practice that illustrate the importance of the chosen topic.
• Strategies and Recommendations: Provide practical strategies and recommendations for nurses to apply the principles of cultural competence or cultural humility in their practice.
• Conclusion: Summarize the main points and emphasize the call to action for nurses to embrace diversity and avoid single stories.

1. Presentation Delivery: You may create a narrated PowerPoint with 7-10 slides (not including title or reference slides), or a recorded video presentation. Speaker notes should be included if you do not use a voiceover or narrated format. A recorded video presentation should not be more than 8-10 minutes (no less than 6-7 minutes).

Assessment Criteria:

Assessment of the presentations will be based on the following criteria:

• Relevance to the TED Talk and Nursing Practice
• Practical Strategies and Recommendations
• Presentation Skills (speaker notes or voiceover).
• Overall Presentation Quality (slide limit, no full sentences, creativity, grammar, spelling)

Be creative… include color, pictures, and anything to grab the attention of your audience. Remember that PowerPoint presentations have minimal words on slides (only key points). However, you will use the speaker notes to expand on slides and explain the slides (you can do this with a voiceover or in speaker notes).

PowerPoint Template may be used or you may create your own (remember, if you are creating a PPT, you must either do a voiceover or speaker notes). When submitting, please use the following job aid to submit with speaker notes. PPT must be submitted in pdf format if using speaker notes.
