Purpose: Future health care professionals need to become comfortable sharing information about food and nutrition. In doing so, students must be sure to use reliable sources of information, interpret that information accurately, and communicate it clearly. These discussions will allow you to practice the skills that are used when educating clients about the connections between lifestyle and health.
The length of your response should be sufficient to respond in a clear and detailed manner, but should not wander from the focus of the prompt. It is recommended that your response stay in the 100-250 word count range. For replies to classmates, be sure to add to the conversation. Include new factual information. Your reply should be at least 4 sentences in length.
Task: In the Chapter 1 lecture, you were introduced to Michael Pollan’s Food Rules (Chapter 1 Lecture at 5:20). He distinguishes between food and edible food-like substances. Michael Pollan created the simple rules to encourage us to think about what we are eating. This is not meant to be a “diet” to follow. It does not mean that we must avoid all “edible food-like substances.” But perhaps by learning more about the food we are eating, we will shift proportions to favor less ultra-processed food.
For this discussion, find one (and only one) example of a food and one (and only one) example of an edible food-like substance in your food environment.
Embed an image of each of the 2 items in your reply. Don’t know how to embed images? Use the Help function on the left-hand menu of Canvas, or ask Leo. Search “how to embed images in a discussion.”
Below the two images, describe which is the food and which is the edible food-like substance. How did you determine that distinction? Why does it matter? Be sure to reply to at least two classmates’ posts.
