As childcare professionals, it is often necessary to recommend services for your students and their families. A community resource provides a specific service to individuals and/or families that are in a time of need or that will enhance the quality of life. Community resources are affordable to all; typically being free or offering scholarships, financial assistance, and/or have a sliding scale based on income. This assignment will give you the opportunity to align resources available to support children and families in your community.
Assignment Description:
This assignment will give students the opportunity to align resources available to support children and families in their community based on a case study family (provided) and an Interviewed family (known by student).
This assignment provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate competency in the course objectives and specific NAEYC Key Competencies and CA ECE-TPEs that are identified on the for this assignment.
There are 4 parts to the assignment that will be completed as described below.
Students will complete and submit the 4 parts by using the writing template.
Assignment Directions:
For this assignment, you will take the perspective of a teacher.
- Select two families to learn about and plan for; one from a case study and one family that you know personally.
- One from the
- One family you know that is willing to be interviewed.
- Based on what you learn about the families, research and select community resources to support each family’s needs. Make sure to select two different resources.
Part A. Responses for Case Study Family
- Name of the family from the Case Study
- Identify characteristics of the family and community and how these characteristics influenced the child and family. Such as, including how you think the case study story impacts the family.
- What did you identify as the familys strengths? What are the stressors? Identify at least 5 stressors and/or strengths, in total. Explain why you think it is a strength or stressor.
- What contemporary issues (chapter 8) may be impacting this family?
- From the theories learned about in class, identify one and connect it to either how they were used to inform your selection of resources, how they relate to the dynamics of the family, parenting styles used, how they identified strengths and stressors, or another element of your interview.
Part B. Community Resources for Case Study Family
- Name of the agency or organization
- The website with a live link
- Describe the specific services offered.
- How do you know this resource is free or on a sliding scale, provide a link or other evidence.
- Provide the official philosophy and goals of the program. This is the only part that should be copied directly from the source.
- Explain how the resource you selected will support this specific family.
Part C. Responses for the Interview Family
- Type of family interviewed (please use a fictitious name to protect their privacy). Identify characteristics of the family including who is in the family and ages of child(ren).
INTERVIEW:
- Ask the family/guardian to compare their own education or school experience with their childs education or school experience. Ask the family to share how their educational experiences have influenced their perspective on how their child is being educated.
- Ask the family/guardian to describe ways they are involved in their childs school experiences and how their level of engagement compares to what they recall about their own family’s engagement while they were in school. Ask the family to share how their personal experiences have influenced their ideas on parental involvement.
- Ask the family/guardian to identify at least one contemporary issue, as learned about in class and how it might affect their child’s development and learning. (You may need to explain what contemporary issues are)
AFTER THE INTERVIEW
- What did you identify as the familys strengths? What were the stressors? Identify at least 5 stressors and/or strengths, in total. Explain why you think it is a strength or stressor.
- From the theories learned about in class, identify one and connect it to either how they were used to inform your selection of resources, how they relate to the dynamics of the family, parenting styles used, how they identified strengths and stressors, or another element of your interview.
- Reflect on elements of your own life experiences that may have impacted how you heard and interpreted the family situation and your responses.
- Describe how you applied objective and and techniques during your family interview.
Part D. Community Resources for the Interview family (This resource must be different from the resource you chose for the case study family)

- Describe the specific services offered.
- How do you know this resource is free or on a sliding scale, provide a link or other evidence.
- Provide the official philosophy and goals of the program. This is the only part that should be copied directly from the source.
- Explain how the resource you selected will support this specific family.
