You will search for for a short form text (e.g., podcast, TedTalk, YouTube content, blog, and/or news article) and complete one entry in the style outlined in the guidelines section. However, on weeks with assigned readings, you will choose one reading and compose an additional entry.
TOTAL ENTRIES: 2
Each entry is worth 5 points and to receive full credit, your journal entry should include all of the following:
Title:
Author:
Summary: You will write a 3-5 sentence summary of the text. This summary should outline the articles main points.
Response: You will write 6-10 sentence response to the text. In your responses, you will articulate YOUR thoughts on the reading and examine the rhetorical situation in the readings. Though you may elect not to include every element in your response, consider the following questions to help formulate your response:
- Is the author telling a story? Is the authoring reporting information? Is the author persuading? Is the writer telling a story, reporting, writing creatively, and persuading all at the same time? (e.g. I believe the author….)
- Who seems to be the authors primary audience? Secondary audience? How do you know? Why do you think someone would read (view, listen to, etc.) the text? How does the author capture and sustain audience attention? (e.g. I think the authors intended audience is….)
- Rhetorical appeals. How does the author use the rhetorical appealsethos, pathos, and logosto reach his or her audience? How does the author convey credibility? What kinds of evidence does the author offer to support the point of the piece? (e.g. A few rhetorical appeals I see the author using….)
- Modes and media. What choices has the writer made about mode (visual, linguistic, aural, gestural, spatial)? If multiple modes are used, how do they interact with each other? For example, if the piece includes both visuals and writing, is meaning conveyed by both the visuals and the writing, or does one mode convey more meaning than the other? What choices has the writer made about media? How do the writers choices about modes and media reflect his or her purposes and audiences? (e.g. I see the author uses….)
What have been some major takeaways from these readings, community builders, discussion posts? What are some lingering questions that you might have regarding the reading materials youve been asked to undertake? What connections can you make between the readings and those still to come? In 250 words construct this Writing Draft Reflection.
