Skim over Kahneman Part 4. In this section, Kahneman discusses ten psychological constructs – Chapters 25 to 34 – that people commonly use when making decisions.
Select one of the psychological constructs discussed in that section that you feel applies strongly to you in that it often, or easily, influences how you make decisions.
Original Post
- Give the name of the construct/chapter.
- Describe a situation where you used this construct in making a decision. Be precise and clear. Points will be deducted for vagueness and generalities.
- Tell us how you would approach that decision if you had to make it now, having studied Kahneman for several weeks.
- Give your reasons, and be clear and precise.
- If you would not change a thing about how you made the decision, state that, and give a substantive account of why not, and make reference to Kahneman’s work in your account.
- If you would change how you made the decision, tell us how you would change it, and why you would change it. In this account, make reference to Kahneman’s work.
For 3.1 and 3.2 – “Reference to Kahneman’s work” means reference to any of his work you have studied this semester, not necessarily just from Part 4 of the book. You do not need to use APA format, you can just use a shorthand way to show us you understand where Kahneman’s work fits in with your decision making process. Here are some examples of shorthand ways to reference him where you reflect on your decision you described. Because everyone reading your original post is by now familiar with Kahneman, you can use the shorthand approach and people will understand what you are referring to.
Examples:
“I can now see that when I [made that decision] it helped me that I was using my System 2. Had I only used my System 1, the decision would have had [these consequences], because of [these reasons].”
“Having read this section, I now see how how the endowment effect played a role in my decision. I used a reference point that I just chose arbitrarily. Overconfidence made me think that I was smart enough to come up with a good reference point, without researching it first.”
(For clarity’s sake, I emphasized the Kahneman concepts above by using bold. You do not need to put them in bold.)
Peer Response
Respond to at least one peer. This response can be quick and casual, it does not have to be substantive. It could just signal to your peer that you empathize with them, or that you are prone to the same issue, or that you are surprised by what they described because you have never thought of it before, etc. A one sentence response is fine. You can also just post a meme to respond to them, or one of your favorite quotes or aphorisms, or a cartoon.
Points: 7 points for OP. 1 point for PR.
