PREFERABLY, SOMEONE WHO CAN LATER WRITE THE PAPER TOO, I WILL PROVIDE SOURCES FOR BIBLIOGRAPHY, as well as class lecture, textbook, class reading options. My research topic and question: Suburbanization and the development of the Persian Jewish community in Encino and Tarzana, Los Angeles County
How did postWorld War II suburbanization in Encino and Tarzana shape the growth and settlement of the Persian Jewish community following the Iranian Revolution?
Directions: Develop an annotated bibliography of scholarly sources relevant to your research topic. Each entry should include a proper citation and a concise evaluation of the sources significance, reliability, and contribution to your research question.
You need to have a total of 5 sources for this assignment (do not submit all of your sources). These should be peer-reviewed, academic sources that you will be using for your final paper. Your annotation should have the following:
1. Main research questions/topic of the article/book
2. Methodology for the article/book: Is this qualitative, quantitative, etc.
3. Findings from the article/book
4. Explain how this source relates to your final project
SOME TIPS
- A proper annotation should take up at least 3/4 of one page depending on your writing ability (single-spaced). You should not be turning in annotations that are half a page long. That is insufficient.
- Do not tell me something is merely quantitative/qualitative. You must be specific.
- You must explain the IMPORTANCE of the findings. Do not just list findings, explain why they matter.
- You MUST synthesize your sources with your other sources, and your overall project.
- Quick Source Recap
- Primary Sources (Direct from the source, has not been interpreted, filtered through other sources)
- Databases
- Interviews
- Historical records
- Newspapers
- Government Records
- Non-Profit/Organizational Reports
- Documentaries
- Secondary Sources (Need 5 Peer-Reviewed, interpreted through other sources)
- Journal Articles
- Academic Books
- Get the UCLA VPN so you can access these off-campus
- Some are better for Humanities (Jstor) while some are better for Social Sciences overall (Ebsco, ProQuest)
- Identify 5-10 keywords (be specific)
- For example:
- What does that mean?
- Identify the main thesis/argument/contribution this sources is trying to make
- Identify the methodology they are using (quantitative/qualitative/theory/history/etc
- Identify their findings/conclusion
- Does this source align with or counter your expectations?
- Keep or Drop based on the difficulty of mental acrobatics you need to do to make this fit your project.
- You only need to include the required 5 secondary sources
- Do:
- Be very, very specific about your sources in terms of data/methodology/findings/etc.
- Explain how your source is important for your project.
- Explain how this sources complements the other sources you are using.
- Don’t
- Tell me a source is simply “quantitative” or “qualitative” or “historical” That does not mean anything-
- Give me a superficial summary of your source that is 5 sentence long
- Skip the importance or synthesis with other sources, you will get no credit.
- Yes, you can change everything at whatever point you want to change it. This is your project.
- Do I need more than 5 secondary sources?
- Can I turn this in late?
- No. I must stress that you have the deadlines available since Week 1. There are no surprises. If you wait until the last minute and are unable to turn it in, that’s on you.
- Yes! Please. Let me help you.
- Please use the various sources I have given you in the modules.
- Supplementary Readings: I gave you dozens of sources that can help.
- Mapping Projects: This is helpful if you are taking the storymap approach
- SCAG: They have tons of housing reports
- Please funnel your sources
- You need to start with a larger overall topic: I.e. redlining, and then filter down to more specific sources that address your question.
- Have at least one general source that address the larger issue (i.e. use a book)
Where to search?

* Yes, a good project will have 5-10 sources. You are free to choose the other 5 and I encourage you to think outside the box.
* Can I get some feedback on my annotations before I submit?
Reminders
Example:
How A Predatory Real Estate Practice Changed The Face Of Compton.(Compton,
California ). (2021). In All Things Considered. National Public Radio, Inc. (NPR).
The peer-reviewed scholarly source, How A Predatory Real Estate Practice Changed The Face Of Compton by National Public Radio (NPR) examines the citys past as a predominantly white suburb and the systematic forces that prevented Black Americans from building wealth through homeownership. The article aims to illustrate what the systematic forces are and how these factors have contributed to the demographic shift that transformed Compton into an African American community. Upon analyzing the source, it is evident that the main research question is: How did the practice of blockbusting shape the racial transformation of Compton? This source, found on the UCLA library database, incorporates qualitative data, utilizing historical analysis, personal stories, and interviews with Compton residents about their experiences with housing discrimination. The article provides a dialogue (text and audio) between residents of Compton (i.e. Robert Johnson, Juanita Sanchez) and an NPR host (i.e.Alisa Chang). The residents describe the rapid transformation from a white suburb to a black suburb and explain the harsh realities of a predatory real estate practice known as blockbusting. My research question is: How did systematic racism in housing policies, economic shifts, and urban planning contribute to Comptons demographic shift from a white working-class suburb to a predominantly Black and Latino community? Hence, this source, which I found to be the most useful for my research, relates to my research paper as it provides historical context and discusses how and why these factors (blockbusting, systematic racism, urban planning) led to the transition from an all white to black suburb in Compton. The article is especially valuable because it offers firsthand accounts from residents, sharing what their lives were like during this transition and how it impacted them and their families.
