Critical Thinking Exercise #2

Police use of deadly force remains a controversial topic in political and academic circles. Two highly influential studies (attached below) on the role of race in police use of deadly force were published within a year of each other in the same peer-reviewed academic journal (Criminology & Public Policy). They used very different methods, and they reported very different findings.

On one hand, James et al. (2016) used a high-fidelity laboratory experiment in which 80 police officers were given realistic guns and were put into a training simulation range. In contrast, in the Nix et al. (2017) study, the authors used a dataset compiled by The Washington Post on 990 fatal police shootings that occurred in 2015. Nix and colleagues were unable to examine incidents in which officers did NOT use deadly force, but instead they investigated whether Black or White suspects were more likely to be attacking the officer and/or be unarmed during these events.

In this assignment, students will read these two articles (attached below) and critically evaluate the advantages and limitations of both studies. You will write a short paper (2-3 double-spaced pages, 500-700 words) in which you summarize the research questions, methods, and findings from each of these studies. You also will discuss which of the two studies approaches you found to be more advantageous, effective, informative, or convincing. Next, you must locate, cite, and discuss ONE additional research study published in a peer-reviewed academic journal that focuses in some way on police use of force. In your paper, you should describe how the findings from this additional study correspond with, contradict, or complicate the conclusions from the studies by James et al. (2016) and Nix et al. (2017).

Your paper should include five components:

  1. A brief description of the studies by James et al. (2016) and Nix et al. (2017)
  2. A discussion of which studys approach you found to be more effective or convincing
  3. A summary of the additional peer-reviewed study on police use of force that you located
  4. A discussion of how this study relates to the articles by James et al. (2016) and Nix et al. (2017)
  5. A References page with a proper APA-style citation of your additional article
