Overview
In this assignment, you will create a collection of sources in preparation for your project, an Advocacy Action Plan that investigates and outlines the historical foundations of a social movement and an affiliated interest group of your choosing. Creating a collection of sources will help you investigate your chosen social movement and affiliated interest group, explain strategies used by your chosen movement and interest group to advocate for change, and advocate for social change. Taking this step to briefly summarize each source and consider how it relates to your project will ensure you have collected credible sources that will support your ideas. Sometimes this step is called creating an annotated bibliography, and the analysis of each source is called an annotation.
Directions
Review the Project Guidelines and Rubric linked in the Supporting Materials section below. The final project requires you to include at least five sources. For this assignment, you will identify a collection of sources that will be used in your project. Out of your five sources, at least two must come from the Shapiro Library. It is important to understand and acknowledge the views of the opposition so that you are both well-informed and able to defend your position. Therefore, at least one of your sources must be in opposition to your viewpoint.
You can include sources from the Library Resource and your own independent research. At this stage, it is helpful to include a larger collection of sources to help you develop your research. Ensure you use resources from diverse perspectives, which means that you should be looking for sources whose authors come from a variety of backgrounds and represent different viewpoints. Having different perspectives also means recognizing how the authors background may influence the content. Consider using sources from a mix of different cultures, genders, socioeconomic backgrounds, educational backgrounds, or political affiliations to ensure that a variety of voices are included.
Then create annotations for each of the sources. In each annotation, you will summarize the source, evaluate the sources credibility, and explain how the source is relevant to the social movement and affiliated interest group that you chose for your project. Consider how you can use the SIFT method in the course Library Resource as you evaluate the credibility of your sources. Also, think about how you can prevent bias, misinformation, or disinformation from impacting your research. Refer to the APA Style Guide for details on how to provide a citation entry for the source.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
- Sources: Provide at least five sources, including at least two from the Shapiro Library, and at least one that is in opposition to your position.
- Citation Entries: Provide APA-style citation entries for at least five sources that would appear in your References list.
- Summary: Provide a brief summary of each source. Include your responses to the following questions:
- What is the main idea?
- What are two to three key points?
- Credibility: Evaluate the credibility of each source. Consider the following questions:
- Does the source have a reliable reputation?
- When was the source published? Is it up-to-date with the latest information?
- Who is the author? Does the author have expertise in the topic? What are the authors credentials?
- What is the bias in the source?
- Relevant: Explain how the source is relevant to the social movement and affiliated interest group.
- Perspective: Determine how the perspective of each source contributes to an understanding of the social movement and affiliated interest group.
