English composition II discussion

now you all should have done the Plagiarism Tutorial. Hopefully, you passed the Certification Test at the end of the tutorial. If you have not yet passed it, though, please don’t give up. Go back and repeat the tutorial. Some of you may find watching the videos and taking notes to be most helpful. Others may prefer to review the 15 types of plagiarism described in the tutorial, paying close attention to the original source material and the student versions. (Don’t forget – the tutorial provides a detailed explanation of what is wrong with each student version, so be sure to read those as well!)

Whether you have passed the Certification Test yet or not, however, I would like you all to do the following short writing assignment, the goal of which is to help you identify specific types of attribution (the act of referencing a work or remark to a particular person or entity in your own writing) that either confuse you or give you some difficulty. These will be the areas to which you will wish to pay particular attention as you work through the course this semester.

Directions

If you have already passed the Certification Test, I would like you to write a brief reflection of about 250 words in which you describe your experience with the Plagiarism Tutorial. You may wish to address some (or all) of the following (just remember: this should be written in prose (paragraph) form, not as a list of answers to questions):

What is your previous experience in quoting, paraphrasing, and citing sources, both in the text of a paper and in a reference list at the end of the paper?

In what ways was the system used in the tutorial similar and/or different from your past experiences?

Which types of plagiarism were the most difficult for you to detect?

Name at least one thing you learned from this tutorial.

How long did it take you to work through the tutorial and pass the Certification Test? What advice would you give to classmates who are struggling to pass the test?

In what ways was doing this tutorial helpful? Do you feel as though you have a better understanding of plagiarism and ways to cite sources now that you have completed the tutorial?

If you have NOT yet managed to pass the Certification Exam, you may wish to address some (or all) of the following:

What is your previous experience in quoting, paraphrasing, and citing sources, both in the text of a paper and in a reference list at the end of the paper?

In what ways is the system used in the tutorial similar to and/or different from citation systems you have used in the past? Do you think the different system is causing your difficulty in passing the exam? Why or why not? How might you create a mental technique for noticing and avoiding these pitfalls?

Which types of plagiarism are giving you the most trouble?

Is there something specific you do not understand? Might posting a question to the Q & A forum be helpful? (Remember, your classmates and I are here to help; feel free to reach out to us!)

How long have you spent working through the tutorial and taking the Certification Test? (Please be honest! If you did NOT work through the tutorial and jumped directly to the test, that may be your problem right there!)

What is your strategy for passing this test? In other words, what are you planning to do differently the next time so that you will be more likely to achieve your goal?

Your assignment will be due on February 1 at 11:59.

After you have completed your assignment, go back and read the responses of your classmates. Was your experience similar to theirs? Write a short response of approximately 150 words to two of your classmates. Exchange ideas and offer advice if applicable. Your responses will be due on February 2 at 11:59 pm.
