English Question

Please prepare a 35-minute presentation that includes the following information (each component is worth 5 points):

  • A brief introduction of who you are (at minimum, your name) and what you are going to be speaking about (your compare-and-contrast essay prompt)
  • Your thesis statement (read exactly as it is currently written in your essay)
  • A brief summary of your analysis (What are your main points of comparison? What does each of your paragraphs discuss?)
  • 2 pieces of evidence from your essay and how they each support your thesis (identify source, read quote/paraphrase/summary, elaborate as needed)
  • A conclusion/final thought/reflection on your writing experience

Assingment:

For your first essay you are going to write a compare-and-contrast research paper that develops a clear analytical argument. For this essay, CHOOSE ONE of the following prompts:

  1. From p. 859: Look through an anthology of literature, and identify two poems by different authors that speak on the same subjectfor example, love, sacrifice, alienation, or war. Write a LITERARY ANALYSIS in which you compare and contrast the two poems themes, paying attention to the language of the poems and the organization of your own essay. (**Note: Each poem counts as a primary text for your evidence, so you would be incorporating evidence from the two and would need at least one additional credible source to meet the three-source minimum).
  2. From p. 784 Choose several political posters from a recent election (at the national or local level), and do a TEXTUAL ANALYSIS of them. Study two opposing candidates posters to identify what message each is trying to convey about their candidacy. How successful are the posters at communicating the candidates messages? Use visual details (colors, images, font, wording, and so on) to develop a CLEAR INTERPRETATION OR JUDGMENT of the posters. (**Note: Each poster counts as a primary text for your evidence, so you would be incorporating evidence from the two and would need at least one additional credible source to meet the three-source minimum).
  3. Compare and contrast online and in-person education.
  4. Compare and contrast e-books versus printed books.
  5. Compare and contrast social media versus traditional media (newspapers and television).
  6. Compare and contrast two adaptations of a classic novel (two film adaptations or a film and stage-play adaptation, for example).
  7. Compare and contrast two forms of government.

Note: You are able to be creative in terms of the points of comparison that you analyze for your chosen topic. However, regardless of the topic you choose, those points of comparison must be clear and explicit in your essay.

Requirements:

  • Thesis: Develop a thesis statement that clearly states your chosen topic, encompasses your points of comparison, and explains why the similarities and differences you are analyzing are significant.
  • Evidence: Support your thesis with a substantial number of summaries/quotes/paraphrases from three credible sources (minimum). Meaning, avoid using a one- to two- sentence stand-alone quote from each of your sources. Show mastery of your sources and be sure to integrate them fully into your essay with sufficient evidence. Make sure it is also clear how each piece of evidence illustrates your points and supports your thesis. (**Note primary texts for options 1 and 2).
  • In-text Citations: Make sure to include an MLA parenthetical citation after each source reference throughout your essay, as well as signal phrases such as “According to the [author/article/etc.] …” to establish credibility when introducing your evidence.
  • Structure: Organize your essay with a clear introduction, body paragraphs that expand on your thesis, and a conclusion that restates your thesis and summarizes/reflects on your overall analysis. Make sure to organize your body paragraphs using either the block method or point-by-point method for comparing and contrasting.
  • Length: 3-5 pages (3 full pages minimum), double-spaced
  • Works Cited Page (next page after the essay): MLA-style Works Cited page featuring your three sources (minimum), listed in alphabetical order. Make sure this page follows MLA format like the rest of your essay, but with hanging indentation for each source listed. Also, make sure to remove the hyperlink so your links are not clickable.
  • MLA Format: Times New Roman size 12-point font, double-spaced (with no extra spaces either before or after any paragraphs/headings), 1″ margins all around, proper MLA heading with last name and page number in document Header (see template in previous assignments), each new paragraph indented properly, left-aligned text for essay, etc.
  • Grammar and Mechanics: Revise your work for errors in grammar and mechanics. You can utilize the Editor feature on your word processor as well as having me and/or a tutor review your writing. There should be minimal to no errors in your final draft. Your work must also be written in third person with no contractions.
