Family health assessment and reflection using CFAM

Objectives: 1. To explore the structural component of the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) by developing a genogram to assess family composition, relationships, and household patterns. 2. To examine how family structure, health history, and intergenerational patterns influence health outcomes. 3. To critically reflect on how family history and experiences shape personal and professional nursing perspectives. Assignment guidelines: Family plays an important role in shaping health behaviors, illness patterns, and overall well-being. This assignment requires you to create a genogram of your family and reflect on key family health patterns, intergenerational influences, and social determinants of health. Your reflection should critically analyze how family structures, relationships, and experiences contribute to health outcomes and nursing care considerations. The assignment will require the following components: 1. Genogram Creation Create a detailed hand drawn genogram that includes: At least three generations (e.g., grandparents, parents, yourself, siblings, children if applicable). Family members relationships, significant life events, and health conditions. Appropriate symbols and lines to represent relationships, illnesses, and key dynamics. A legend explaining all symbols used. 2. Personal Reflection Your reflection should integrate personal insights with nursing knowledge and include: a. Family Health Patterns and Influences Identify trends in health conditions (e.g., chronic illnesses, mental health, substance use). Discuss intergenerational health behaviors and risk factors. Reflect on family strengths and challenges related to health and wellness. b. Social Determinants of Health Analyze how the SDoH (factors like income, education, social support, culture, or access to healthcare) influence family health. Reflect on how these determinants impact your own nursing perspective. c. Personal and Professional Reflection How has this exercise shaped your understanding of family health assessment? What nursing interventions or approaches would be relevant for families with similar patterns? How will this influence your future nursing practice?
