SSC 230: Culture and Civics Social Problem Presentation and Paper 200 Points Total Overview: Table Topics Presentation and Paper: Students will select one social problem, using the definition of social problem from Joel Best (reading from week 1). Students should select a topic they can use course materials to analyze in some way. Students will write one paper and a brief presentation on the topic. Students will find one recent news article related to their chosen social problem. Students will also find one outside academic source, a peer reviewed journal article on this topic as well. You can find both academic, peer-reviewed sources and news articles using databases in the library course guide: Home – SSC 230 – LibGuides at Nebraska Methodist College Students will write a 3-4 page (double-spaced) analysis of the social problem. You should briefly summarize the news item, explain how it relates to a class source, what the academic item adds to the conversation of the social problem, your opinion on the subject, and some questions for the class to discuss. This paper will be submitted in Brightspace and cited in proper APA format. The student will record a brief 5-10 minute presentation explaining the news item about the current social problem, how this relates to material for class, what the academic research you found about this topic adds to your understanding of the social problem, and some questions for the class to discuss on the discussion board that week. Students do not need to give their own opinions on the matter in their oral presentation, but they can if they wish. Instructions for how to record the presentation can be found in handouts. It is recommended that students use a Powerpoint or other slideshow software while presenting. The link to this presentation will be posted in the discussion board on the date assigned. With the topic, you want to make sure you dont have too wide of a topic. For example, talking about discrimination in general is much too wide. You want to talk about a specific social problem, such as discrimination against a certain class of people in a certain place/time. Below I have some examples that could work for a paper, but the topic is up to you. Please talk to me if you have questions. Below that I have a hypothetical outline for what a successful paper would discuss with one of these topics. Chosen topic is Human trafficking Example outline: A successful paper on the topic of the gender pay gap, as an example, might follow this outline: Introduction paragraph to the topic with an attention-getter. Perhaps you start with a statistic about the gender pay gap that is shocking, troubling, etc. Explanation/definition of the social problem you are discussing, including a brief summary of the news article you find about the social problem. You might summarize an article in the news about the most recent gender pay gap data in the US. Some paragraphs explaining how research/academic discussion of this topic adds to what you read in the news article. You should talk about a course source that relates to your topic and how it relates. For example, you might talk about an article or video we watch on the gender pay gap or gender discrimination and how that adds to/is different from the news article. You should also find an outside piece of academic research which talks about this. For example, there is a research article you can find that uses experimental studies to determine how much of a penalty to wages motherhood is for women. You should summarize this academic item and explain what it adds to the topic. Discuss your own perspective/opinion on the topic End with questions you would want the class to answer/consider and finish with a conclusion paragraph that will summarize what you discussed throughout the paper.
