Instructional Strategies

Part 1: Annotated Bibliography of Instructional Strategies. Each scholar will follow the areas and annotate four peer-reviewed journal articles that describe an evidence-based instructional strategy pertaining to that area. Im defining instructional strategy loosely here as any technique or approach that has been shown through research to effectively improve student learning. This might be termed a learning strategy. These strategies may be multi-step strategies or more narrowly focused. For example, for Reading Comprehension, one strategy involves chunking text into smaller segments and having students summarize and then ask questions related to the text. Another strategy related to Word Decoding would be breaking words into meaningful parts, like affixes and root words. Im asking that whatever strategies you identify, that they relate directly to your topic area and that they have a research-base that indicates it is an effective strategy. ReadingFor Reading, each subheading should be taken as a whole area. So, for example, if you choose Word Recognition, each of your 4 annotations should pertain to Word Recognition.o Pre-reading (e.g., phonological awareness, alphabetic principle)o Word Recognition (e.g., phonics, sight word recognition, contextual analysis)o Fluency (e.g., rate, accuracy x speed, prosody)o Vocabulary (e.g., different strategies for vocabulary development)o Comprehension (e.g., different strategies for developing understanding of text)WritingFor Writing, I will take a conglomerate of different kinds of strategies pertaining to the following areas. (Note: there may be additional subcategories in the area of writing.)o Process Approach to Writing (Graves)o Idea generationo Draft writingo Revisiono Self- and Peer-evaluationo Embedding discrete skills such as grammatical conventions, sentence structure, and spelling into the context of meaningful writing. MathFor Math, I would like for the four annotations to be done in one of the three areas listed below, if possible. Concept Development (e.g., understanding the purpose of basic operations and the why of different mathematical functions) Computation (e.g., mastering the solving of equations, use of algorithms to solve equations) Problem Solving (e.g., applying critical analysis, equations, and mathematical reasoning to solve authentic problems) An annotation of an article is a comprehensive summary of the article. Each annotation should be approximately 112 pages in length (double spaced, 12-point font) and include: The reference at the top of the page (please use APA format) A desrption of the instructional strategy Identification of the target population (e.g., grade and developmental level) A brief evaluation of the intervention by describing: o the effect of the intervention (include reported research results)o the feasibility of implementation (does it appear to be relatively easy to implement or somewhat complicated)o any necessary modifications you might have to make to the intervention for specific populations of students.
