Of the styles studied in the chapter “Jazz 1930-1960”, which do you prefer and why? Which styles are likely to have the most influence on future musicians?
I love all the sub-genres of jazz from 1930-1960, but I think the biggest lasting influence in jazz today came from Bebop. To me, bebop started to make jazz more of an intellectual art form as opposed to just being music that you can tap your foot to. Before the 40s, jazz was dominated by the swing era. Big band swing was essentially the pop music of the day, designed for dancing and keeping things light. Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie showed up and essentially told the audience to sit down and listen, because they weren’t going to be able to dance to this anyway.
Bird and Dizzy completely flipped the script on what a jazz performance could be. Instead of the huge, polished big bands and their predictable arrangements, bebop stripped everything down to small, lean combos. This change wasn’t just about saving space, it was about the intellectual flexing and heavy improvisation. Charlie Parker brought a new fluidity to the saxophone, using wild altissimo notes that made traditional melodies feel basic.

To me, bebop is to jazz as progressive rock is to rock and roll. It pushed the genre into an entirely different direction and gave birth to further sub-genres like hardbop, cool jazz, or modal jazz. Bebop reset the trajectory of jazz, and paved a separate path for a less gentrified, less commercial, and more progressive version of the music. It also shifted the conversation as to what jazz could be. Without bebop, we would have only had big band swing, and I think jazz would have fizzled out as the trends shifted to rock and roll. Bebop created a rebirth of jazz and gave us what modern jazz is today.
