For this assignment, use quotations from the readings to highlight important concepts, mark areas where you have questions or want to focus our discussion, and make connections between the two texts. This will help you practice close reading, make connections between the authors, and prepare for our in-class discussion.

Assigned Readings:

• • Benjamin, Ruha. Introduction” (excerpt). Race After Technology. Polity Press, 2019, pp. 1-34
  • Noble, Safiya. “A Society, Searching.” Algorithms of Oppression. NYU Press, 2018, pp. 15-63

What to Do:

1. Choose 4-6 short passages from these readings that you found provocative, confusing, or important. At least 2 passages must come from each author.
2. For each passage, write a short annotation (34 sentences) that explains:
   1. Why did you choose it? What drew your attention to this passage? Why does it matter?
   2. What questions does it raise? What do you want to explore or understand more deeply?
   3. How does it connect to other ideas? Link the passage to another course concept, a reading, or even a personal experience with technology.

Format & Requirements:

• Length: 4-6 quoted passages and annotations for each
• Format: Google Doc, Word Doc, or PDF
• Reference both readings (at least two quotations from each)
• Focus on analysis and reflection, not just summary
• Cite your sources
  • Put each passage in quotation marks and include page numbers
  • Write your annotation directly beneath it
  • Submit all annotations together in a single document
