For this week’s reading response, answer one question from each theory fully and completely (two questions in total). To fully answer the question, tether your response to specific theory concepts from your chapter reading and use quotes from the chapter to help ground your argument (you do not need a full APA citation for quotes, just put which edition of the book you are using and a page number — (10th, p. 214), for example). Each question asks you to think in the specific (your personal experiences) and then tie it to the larger understanding of the theory. As we assess your responses, we will be looking to see that you understand the theory by being able to use the concepts from the theory to explain the specific examples. Expectancy Violation Theory (EVT) examines how people respond to violations of their personal space and communication expectations. Answer question 1 or 2 for this theory.
1. Think of a time when you or someone you know violated another person’s expectations, and it was proven to be effective (we typically think of violations as ineffective). What happened? Using specific concepts from the chapter, discuss the experience, and why you think the violation was effective. What role do violation valence and communicator reward valence play in this situation?
2. Watch clip from Big Bang Theory. In this clip, Amy desires more physical affection from her boyfriend Sheldon, and he has been unwilling. When Amy sees their friends Howard and Bernadette kissing, Amy is particularly disappointed and confronts Sheldon. Note that expectancy is a prediction of what will happen, not a desire; even though Amy wants romance, it would be a stretch to say she expected it. Watch what happens when Sheldon violates her expectations. What role do violation valence and communicator reward valence play in Amy’s reaction?
Social Penetration Theory (SPT) explains how relational closeness develops through gradual, ordered self-disclosure.Answer question 3 for this theory.
3. Chris Lane’s song, “I Don’t Know About You” provides an interesting perspective on SPT. Watch the music video and read the lyrics. Using the words and images from the song, how do you see SPT played out in this example? What words or images speak to self disclosure and the layers of Altman and Taylor’s onion? Be specific in your analysis, connecting examples (words, phrases) from the song to concepts from the theory.
