DISCUSSION FORUM INSTRUCTIONS
Discussion Forums in this course are designed to: (i) promote deeper critical thinking on topics introduced in the course; (ii) teach students how to obtain artificial intelligence (AI) through ChatGPT and critically assess information produced by AI; (iii) enable each student to learn more about a topic of interest to them involving social psychology; (iv) use scientific journal articles to back up thoughts and opinions, which broadens knowledge and gives opinions credibility; (v) learn how to cite and reference sources in APA format (the international format for scientific writing, published by the American Psychological Association); and (vi) enter into discourse on topics involving social psychology with classmates.
After finishing readings in the related Learning Module(s) and thinking about the concepts introduced, you will:
- USE CHAT GPT TO MAKE AN INITIAL THREAD POST. Begin a conversation with ChatGPT to obtain NEW information on one of the prompts in a Discussion Forum (not information already clearly addressed in lecture or our textbook), in an effort to expand your knowledge in an area of personal interest. Obtaining good ChatGPT output is an iterative process, which means if you dont like what you see on the first try you can continue a conversation with ChatGPT to improve the prior output (you can also always clear the conversation and begin again). Continue the conversation until you are satisfied with the output.
When you are satisfied with your ChatGPT output, make an Initial Thread Post in the Forum by clicking on Reply directly underneath these instructions. The Initial Thread Post should be formatted as shown below and include the indicated information:
Title: Here you should type a unique short title that describes the prompt topic you chose. Please be diligent in creating a short descriptive title; there are a lot of students in this class and a good title will help students quickly find topics of interest (or avoid topics that may trigger a negative reaction).
ChatGPT Output: After typing ChatGPT Output: to identify the source, copy and paste 200-300 words from the GPT output (whatever portions of the AI you would like to share with the class). DO NOT ADD ANY OF YOUR OWN WORDS HERE, COPY AND PASTE ONLY WHAT AI HAS PROVIDED; YOU WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ADD YOUR OWN THOUGHTS IN STEP 2. Include an APA-compliant citation and reference for the ChatGPT information.
Reference: Provide a formal reference for the ChatGPT source of information, which should take the form shown below. The ChatGPT http link provided in the reference should be the unique link to your ChatGPT conversation so that anyone interested can see your entire conversation with ChatGPT and how you improved the output through an iterative process. [Check the link to make sure it works!]
Reference
OpenAI. (2025). ChatGPT (Aug 7 version 5) [Large multimodal model]. https://chatgpt.com/share/…
[Note: The reference and cite will change, based on the version of ChatGPT you are using and the date it was trained.
- for more information. The inoperable link in blue in the above reference example will be unique for your ChatGPT conversation and should be operable in your post Reference. See Instructions on How to Get Started in ChatGPT to learn how to obtain an operable link for your conversation. Centering of the Reference title and a hanging indent in the reference, to make this reference totally APA compliant, was omitted because this formatting is not available in Canvas Discussion Forums.]FIRST RESPONSE – RESPOND TO YOUR OWN INITIAL THREAD POST IN YOUR OWN. Post a response that either supports or disagrees with the ChatGPT information by clicking on Reply underneath your own Initial Thread Post. Your response to your own Initial Thread Post should include the indicated information:
New Contribution to Own Initial Thread Post: Find a scientific journal article that supports your agreement or disagreement. Briefly describe the selected article in your own words (do not use direct quotes) and include an APA-compliant citation for the article in your text with a complete reference at the end of the text.
Attach PDF: Attach a pdf of the complete study cited and referenced in the post.
Steps 1 and 2 must be completed before the published deadline to be eligible for full credit. This deadline before the Forum closes is critical to give everyone plenty of posts to respond to in Step 3 below, to successfully complete the assignment before the Forum closes.
- SECOND RESPONSE – RESPOND TO A CLASSMATES INITIAL THREAD POST. Before the Forum closes, comment on someone elses Initial Thread Post and First Response that you find of interest, that is on a different prompt than your initial thread post, and to which you can add new perspective (to be eligible for full credit new information must be added to a thread that is on a different prompt than the one you explored in Steps 1-2). Click on Reply directly underneath the post to which you wish to respond. The Response to a classmates Initial Thread Post should be formatted as shown below and include the indicated information:
Title: Provide the name of the classmate you are replying to, and the title of their post. This is critical in the event the TA grading your work needs to find/see the context you are responding to in the Discussion Forum (when grading each student in Canvas grades, only the students posts can be seen).
Evaluation and New Contribution: Agree or disagree with some aspect of the selected Initial Thread Post or First Response ChatGPT, and when doing so make it clear why you agree or disagree through the addition of new information on the topic obtained from a scientific journal article. Include an APA-compliant citation for the source of information in your text with a complete reference at the end of the text. Do not plagiarize a human or ChatGPT hereparaphrase (put everything into your own words).
Attach PDF: Attach a pdf of the complete study cited and referenced in the post.
NOTE: ChatGPT sometimes hallucinates and provides false information. If you identify false information generated by ChatGPT on the topic, are the first to do so, and successfully refute the false information with a credible cite and reference, you will receive a 12-point bonus (yes, that means extra credit!). You may add an additional post to do this if after making the required posts you find false information that was not previously addressed by another student.
