Sociology of Love

Sociology of Love/ First Paper Assignment Deb Cohan, Ph.D. Interview Project The purpose of this interview project is to give you the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding about issues related to love from the perspective of another person. When thinking about whom you want to interview, you may want to consider what issues you feel passionate and curious about or even afraid of. You will need to consider what themes and topics most interest you related to love and what you feel you would benefit from learning more about. Here are many options from which to choose: -an individual (or a couple) who strikes you as deeply in love in a romantic relationship and you want to understand what helps their relationship endure over time, changes, etc. -a person in a commuter marriage -a person over the age of 70 reflecting on how love has shaped their life longitudinally, in positive ways and also in perhaps problematic ways -a person (or couple) that have been together for over 20 years (they need not be a happy couple) -a person who has been with their first love for over 25 years or has gotten back together with that person after 25 years elapsed -a survivor of some kind (trauma, addiction, etc) who has developed a true sense of self love -a therapist -someone who works in the wedding industry -someone who is engaged to be married -someone who got married during the height of the pandemic -a person who has pursued an activity with so much love and gusto—like art, music, etc. If you choose this, you might want to watch the short movie Iris starring Iris Apfel. What you will do: Frame a set of issues, concerns, and questions you would like to address in the interview, using our class discussions and materials as a backdrop. Tape record the interview if at all possible and only if the person agrees to it. Transcribe the interview. Analyze the interview for major themes. You will need to turn in a copy of the interview transcript. Please note that your actual paper is separate from this interview transcription; you may submit these as two separate documents when you upload to Blackboard, or the transcription can come after your paper at the end as one uploaded document. You will use your transcript as one of your data sources for quoting in the actual paper as you would if you were relying on an outside source. Please stick with ONLY the readings and sources for this class; there is no need to do library research for this assignment. Your actual paper will be four pages maximum.
