Overview
In this assignment, you will be guided through decisions in order to create the thesis statement for your project. When you create a thesis statement, you create a structure for the ideas in your project. That structure also helps your reader know what to expect once they keep reading the rest of your paper.
Directions
Address the following items in chronological order. The answers to these questions will help guide you in forming your thesis statement for your project. Submit the answers and your thesis statement using the template linked in the What to Submit section.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
Part One: Identify the Topic
Address the following items, which will become the first part of your thesis statement.
Topic: Identify the topic.
What is the topic of your analysis?
Claim: State the claim.
The claim is what is true or misunderstood about the topic.
Remember that this is your claim about the effectiveness of the text.
What do you believe is true, or what do you believe people misunderstand, about your topic?
Combine the Topic and Claim: Combine your topic and claim to form the first part of the thesis statement.
Remember that this is just the first part of the sentence that will be your thesis statement, but it is not yet the full thesis statement.
Part Two: Second Part of the Thesis Statement
Address the following items, which will become the second part of your thesis statement.
Why the Claim Is True: Explain multiple reasons why the claim is true.
Provide three reasons why your claim is true.
How/why is it true or not true?
Combine the Why Responses: Combine the multiple reasons why the claim is true to form the second part of the thesis statement.
Part Three: Compose the Full Thesis Statement With the First and Second Parts Combined
Thesis Statement: Compose the full thesis statement with the first and second parts combined
The full thesis statement should be formed by combining the partial statement about your topic and claim (from #3) and the partial statement identifying the reasons why the claim is true (from #5).
The two partial statements should be formed together to make one whole sentence, which is the thesis statement. Feel free to make adjustments to the wording so the two partial statements fit together smoothly. Remember that this thesis statement will become the final sentence of the introductory paragraph that you develop in the next assignment.
