Thesis Defense Essay Requirements and Link to Rubric Thesis Defense Essay Scoring Rubric Formatting Requirements: * The entire essay is double-spaced, including the abstract and any block quotations. * * * At the top left corner of the first page, on three consecutive lines, you should have the following header information: * the authors A# – Not the author’s name * the full course number: PHIL 1030-W01 * the date on which you’ve uploaded the document to the designated assignment dropbox * * * The essays title appears near the top of the first page but below the author/course/date header. * * * Pages have a lower right footer with the page number (but not the author’s name). * * * The essay is divided into numbered and/or titled sections in a way that helps the reader identify the essays logical structure. * * * The works cited list is on separate pages in the printed version and is included in the same electronic file as the essay itself, not in a separate file. Notes: * Essays with any plagiarized material, whether the plagiarism is intentional or not, will earn a score of 0%, Every string of words that is copied from any other source must have: * 1. 1. quotation marks at the beginning and end of the copied string of words and 2. a parenthetical citation (following MLA format) immediately following the copied string. 3. * * If any string of words is copied from another source without (1) and (2) above, this constitutes plagiarism and will result in the essay earning a score of 0% with no opportunity to correct the problem and resubmit. * * * Also, the bulk of the essay should be stated in your own words, so you should generally paraphrase the sources you use rather than copying quotes from these sources. Essays in which more than 25% of the text is quoted from other sources will earn a maximum score of 60% (with additional deductions according to the above criteria), and essays that contain more than 50% quoted material will earn no credit). Note also that recycling an essay from another course is also prohibited. If more than 25% of an essay also appears in the same students essay for a different course, the essay will earn no credit. Please make sure that you count the number of words that are part of quotations so that you are not surprised by the penalty described above. * * * Late work is subject to a 10% point deduction per calendar day. * * * The essay should be between 1200 and 1400 words long. Short / Long work is subject to a 10% deduction per 100-word deficit/excess. * * * Essays that are accompanied by either a copy of a NetTutor report and/or a report from an NSCC Library Writing Center tutor will earn five bonus points for including one of the two reports or eight bonus points for including both reports. These should be submitted to the same Assignment Dropbox as the essay itself and are due at the same time as the essay. Late submissions of these reports will not be accepted.
